7/15/2010 On the road to Yellowstone with a Stop at Devils Tower! (& Engagement Day)

We were on the road by 9:20am this morning on our way to Buffalo, Wyoming where we are spending the night tonight.  Lexy's morning started with a smile as she opened her new box of Honey Nut Cheerios and found a flying penguin toy... we are easily amused I guess!?  We then drove to Devils Tower which is located NW of Sundance.  The tale of the Tower says that 7 Native American children were playing when a large bear began to chase them.  The children jumped on to a 3 foot high rock and began to pray that the rock would grow... fast!  The rock grew so high that when the bear caught up with the children he jumped onto the side of the rock but could not reach them.  The bears claws broke and he fell to the ground... as he fell he dug huge grooves down the side of the rock.  Thanks to geologists we now know that this fun story is not true... The large rock is in fact the core of an old volcano.  Over the many, many years the side and surroundings of the volcano have eroded away and exposed the core.  I won't bore you with all of the science behind it but I must say that it was exciting to see the Tower in person! ...  even my mom thought so!!! :)  On our hike around the base of the volcano we got close to several deer and even found some Ponderosa Pine trees to smell (the sunny side smells like butterscotch and the shaded side smells like vanilla).  We are now sitting with-in view of the snow covered Rockie Mountains.  Tomorrow morning we will leave Buffalo and head for Cody.

***Seven years ago today I had the screws removed from my hip AND I found out that Lexy said YES!!!  Because of my surgery I could not drive so she drove to my parents house in Peoria.  My brother Geoff brought me a bouquet of roses to give to Lex.  We were reminiscing today how we talked for a few hours then I made her look at a budget I made for us to survive... It all worked out!!! ***
