7/17/2010 Buffalo Bill Museum & Cody, Wy

Today we slept in and then visited the Buffalo Bill Museum which was actually three museums in one... and I must say that it is probably one of the most impressive museums that we have ever been in!  The three museums included the worlds second largest gun collection (you could spend a day in this part alone!), the Plains Indians Museum, and the Buffalo Bill museum. There was also a great exhibit about the nature and wildlife of Wyoming.  All of the museums were filled with history and packed with well preserved artifacts. The gun display was incredible and it was also really neat to learn more about Buffalo Bill and see many of his belongings.  Some of our favorite exhibits were in the Plain Indians Museum where they had many original head dresses, clothing, tools, and more.  A really amazing exhibit was a 3D reproduction of a cliff where the Native Americans would chase the bison over the edge and the women of the tribe would be at the bottom of the cliff butchering as the bison fell.  The picture below depicts this scene very well!  Seeing all of the exhibits really made us stop and think about what the native people must have went through as they saw their resources and their way of life closing in around them...  I would say that if you are ever close to Cody it is well worth the stop!  We spent the remainder of the day going through the little shops of Cody and having dinner at a great Mexican restaurant.  I found a little store with some excellent fossils that were extremely well preserved and priced... I finally got my Ammonoids and a fossilized fish that all show great detail!
