7/13/2010 Driving to Custer, SD & Mt. Rushmore

This morning we were on the road by 9:00am and were on our way to Custer.  Driving through prairie is very relaxing, there is nothing but grass, an occasional tree, and small pond of water.  The highway is nice but if we didn't have smooth paved roads the prairie would be monsterous!  As we were driving we kept marveling at how the settlers traveled this land with horse and buggy - Talk about a challenge.  I can't imagine!!!  On our way to Custer's Gulch, our campground, we ran into a huge herd of buffalo...Literally!  IT WAS AWESOME!  I tried to get some good pictures, but one second you're excited and the next you're scared to death.  As the ginormous animals came within inches of the truck Ben was getting a little nervous, but this time he couldn't run! :)  These things are huge and they were so close I could have pet a few of them.  Here is a picture but it doesn't do it justice.  After we set up camp, we spent the afternoon lounging around.  We left in the evening for a scenic drive through Custer State Park on our way to Mt. Rushmore.  The scenic drive turned into very tight windy roads and just about everyone in the truck was beginning to get car sick.  It was very pretty though - Lots of deer.  There were tunnels throughout the park which were very neat and deafening since Ben thought it was the perfect place to use his airhorns.  The signs did say honk horn (they were one lane tunnels) however I just don't think they meant through the entire tunnel.  Mt. Rushmore was really astounding - It was neat to see it in person.  We went for the evening program and the light display.  You feel very patriotic through the whole thing and it almost gets you upset as to how helpless you feel in our current nation.  Ben and I talked about how it's so discouraging to see our nation be so great in our past and now seemingly falling from the ranks.  It's hard to imagine what the world will be like for our kids' generation...a little scary.  Enough with the Debbie Downer, it was really neat - I loved it!  I was so exhausted after we got home... I crashed.
